About the position

The Medical Billing Specialist will be a key member of the billing department, responsible for managing various aspects of medical billing and collections. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with extensive knowledge of billing procedures, insurance regulations, and coding systems. The specialist will support the team by troubleshooting employee questions and ensuring efficient collection processes while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support and troubleshoot employee questions.
  • Post payments from lockbox.
  • Follow collection policies to efficiently collect from patients and decrease the number of statements sent each week.
  • Call patients regarding their owed balances per collections policy.
  • Act as a resource to patients and their families about their account balances and insurance questions.
  • Collect patient payments via credit card and process care credit payments.
  • Verify referrals from TriCare prior to office visit.
  • Enroll and/or seek preauthorization for specialty drugs and contact patients with their projected cost.
  • Cover the duties of other team members as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years in medical billing experience.
  • Knowledge of EHR systems and experience required.
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 (10)/CPT coding, EOB's, billing procedures, error reports, denials, and insurance regulations.
  • Outstanding insurance/collections skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of HMO, PPO, Managed Care, Medicare, Medicaid, and/or Worker's Comp. and Personal Injury.
  • Knowledge of Practice Management Systems and Clearinghouse relationships.
  • Motivated, detail-oriented, and able to handle projects independently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Microsoft Excel knowledge (1 year preferred).
  • Experience in medical collection (1 year required).
