About The Position

This position is responsible for performing medical assistant duties and other support functions to facilitate the provision of high-quality patient care to Yakutat Community Health Center (YCHC) patients. This position requires compliance with YTT’s compliance standards, including its Standards of Conduct, Compliance Program, and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of the position’s regular performance evaluation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of HIPAA and ability to adhere to patient confidentiality regulations.
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to observe the patient’s physical and emotional reactions to care and treatment in the ambulatory care setting for the purpose of communicating with nursing and medical staff and making notations in the patient record.
  • Knowledge of and skill sufficient to understand human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, the treatment procedures, the supporting patient charting and teaching and the goals for assigned patients for the purpose of communicating with the patient, nurses, providers and other supporting medical staff.
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to perform medical assistant duties: measuring and recording vital signs, assisting with specimen collection, assisting with diagnostic exams, lifting, transferring, etc.
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to understand and properly use equipment, materials and supplies used for various treatment/diagnostic procedures.
  • Knowledge of assigned department’s policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers, job-related software programs, and electronic health record.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles.
  • Knowledge of diversity and cultural difference of Native American populations, and the ability to appreciate cultural differences and their effect on healthcare delivery.
  • Ability to learn the developmental concepts of pediatric, young adult, adult and geriatric patients for application in the care of patients seen in the Ambulatory Care setting.
  • Ability to identify and react swiftly in emergencies. Maintains BLS Certification.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with all members of the patient care team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, using tact and sensitivity.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize the multiple demands of the job.
  • Ability to obtain Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or registered as a Medical Assistant (RMA) within one year from enrollment.

  • Must present vaccination documentation or submit to immunity testing for Tdap, hepatitis B, measles, varicella, and influenza within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for patient appointments by reviewing and updating patient records prior to appointment. This includes checking for updates of recent test results, lab results and correspondence, and distributing patient related correspondence to the appropriate provider. Also reviews electronic health record (EHR) to determine needed services and whether referrals are in process or have been completed since last visit.
  • Maintains exam rooms according to protocols: cleans rooms between patient exams to ensure patients' comfort and compliance with infection control standards; ensures all necessary supplies are stocked.
  • Appropriately prepares patient for visit and alerts provider when patient is ready to be seen. When provider is unavailable, keeps the patient updated on the status of their appointment and when necessary assists the patient in re-scheduling or scheduling follow-up.
  • Provides initial medical screening: greets patients and directs to appropriate exam room; takes weight, height, temp, blood pressure, and basic medical history; accurately documents in EHR.
  • Assists provider or nurse upon request during examination of patient and according to generally accepted medical standards. Practices universal precautions with respect to established safety protocols. Facilitates communication between the provider(s) and patient as needed.
  • Provide treatments as ordered such as aerosol treatments, immunizations, and injections.
  • Assess medical and medical education needs of the patient and provides education as directed by the provider.
  • Perform laboratory and diagnostic procedures such as venipuncture, urinalysis, glucose, hemoglobin, and electrocardiogram.
  • Provide education and instructions on lab and diagnostic results, medication refills by telephone and in person for patients.
  • Keep patient exam rooms stocked with supplies and organized.
  • Review the provider’s schedule throughout the day and prior to the start of shift to ensure patient flow.
  • Keeps patients aware of possible delays in patient care during such events as patient accidents, traumas, seasonal outbreaks of disease, or other circumstances which increase the number of patients to be seen by providers.
  • Enters results from patient surveys on depression, tobacco use, exercise, and intimate partner violence into the electronic health record.
  • Logs pertinent information into the EHR, initiates requisitions for lab and x-ray.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients; drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment; hands instruments and materials to provider as directed; assists provider with exams as requested; and, cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Performs specialized and routine diagnostic tests including electrocardiograph (EKG), vision screening, and hearing tests.
  • Performs DOT and non-DOT drug urinalysis.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests; performs and documents waived lab test controls per CLIA; and prepares and packages routine labs for shipping.
  • Routes slips, forms and other documents to the appropriate departments.
  • Provides staff support: sorts and distributes mail; maintains office equipment, files, and records; maintains office and medical supply inventory and reorders as needed.
  • Assist provider with patient related communication and/or correspondence including: communication with patients, other medical facilities and other care providers, and submission of prescriptions.
  • Assists with referral management for patient as directed.
  • Keeps work area neat and orderly; assists with the maintenance of supplies and cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality and safeguards medical information.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service education programs.
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Performs related duties.
