About the position

As a Medical Assistant (MA) at Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, Inc. (TVHC), this position performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with a focus on quality of care and customer service. The MA collaborates with clinical staff to support direct patient services, ensuring patient comfort and trust. This full-time role involves working 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday hours, and emphasizes the core values and mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for patient appointments by reviewing and updating patient records prior to appointment.
  • Provides initial medical screening including greeting patients and directing them to appropriate exam rooms.
  • Takes weight, height, temperature, blood pressure, and basic medical history; accurately documents in the medical chart.
  • Maintains exam rooms according to protocols, ensuring cleanliness and compliance with infection control standards.
  • Reports low supplies and works with nursing staff to ensure timely reordering.
  • Prepares patients for visits and alerts physicians when patients are ready to be seen.
  • Performs general clerical duties in support of patient services, including answering phones and completing forms.
  • Assists with patient scheduling to ensure efficient patient flow.
  • Assists physicians or nurses during patient examinations as requested.
  • Practices universal precautions and follows established safety protocols.
  • Facilitates communication between providers and patients, including translation as needed.
  • Provides administrative backup support as needed.
  • Accepts floating assignments to other areas of Clinical as needed and assigned.
  • Utilizes an Electronic Health Record system (EPIC) to document medical visits.
  • Maintains nurses' station according to protocols.
  • Performs EKGs and acts as backup for lab technologist.
  • Acts as interpreter as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or GED), or trade certificate required.
  • Clinical Medical Assistant certification from an accredited school is required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Prior experience as Medical Assistant in a non-profit clinical setting is desirable.
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records (EPIC) is required.
  • Excellent communication skills for taking patients' medical histories and documenting medical information accurately.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse patient populations and staff with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a high-stress environment.
  • Culturally sensitive with demonstrated effectiveness working with ethnically diverse populations.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and non-disclosure according to HIPAA standards.

Nice-to-haves
