About the position

The Medical Assistant in the Primary Care Office is responsible for providing essential patient care and support in a fast-paced healthcare environment. This role involves assisting healthcare providers with various tasks, ensuring patient comfort, and maintaining accurate medical records. The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in enhancing patient experiences and supporting the overall mission of NCH Healthcare System to deliver high-quality care.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfills patient care responsibilities, including checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
  • Escorts patients to exam/procedure rooms.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
  • Assists patients with walking, transfers, dressing, and preparing for exams.
  • Collects patient history, including current medications, allergies, and symptoms.
  • Provides patient care as directed by the provider, including screenings and treatments.
  • Assists providers with various procedures as needed.
  • Documents in the Electronic Medical Record and relays information/instructions to patients and families.
  • Answers patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities, including filing and appointment scheduling.
  • Collects and handles lab specimens following established standards and practices.
  • Adheres to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
  • Utilizes electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High School diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience in a medical office setting as a Medical Assistant or similar role.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
  • Knowledge of basic and specialty-specific medical terminology.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
