About The Position

The Advanced Product Development (APD) team within Collins Aerospace's Interiors organization focuses on next-generation technologies, concepts, and architectures that shape the future of aircraft seating and interior products. We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of advanced concepts, mechanisms, and prototypes for future premium seating and interior systems. This role is hands-on, highly collaborative, and focused on early-stage innovation through rapid design iteration and prototyping. This is an onsite position in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field

  • Previous experience of CAD design and / or CNC programming.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in mechanical design within aerospace, automotive, consumer products, or other regulated industries.
  • Experience with advanced prototyping techniques (additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, prototype tooling, mock‑ups).
  • Familiarity with FAA or other regulatory requirements.
  • Working knowledge of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
  • Experience with concept generation, innovation engineering, and early-stage R&D environments.
  • Understanding of materials such as aluminum alloys, titanium, engineered polymers, and composite structures.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX or similar parametric CAD systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support design and development of new mechanical concepts from ideation through prototype build and evaluation.
  • Create and iterate 3D CAD models and engineering drawings in Siemens NX to define mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Perform engineering analyses, including strength calculations, tolerance analysis, kinematic evaluation, and material selection.
  • Participate in and support prototype development, including hands-on assembly, functional testing, and design troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as structures, industrial design, systems engineering, materials engineering, and operations.
  • Contribute to design reviews and present technical findings, trade studies, and recommendations.
  • Apply engineering tools and methodologies such as FMEA, DFMA, and FEA collaboration to support concept feasibility.
  • Engage with suppliers to evaluate new materials, manufacturing processes, and emerging production technologies.
  • Support transition of successful concepts to downstream product development teams while ensuring knowledge transfer and design intent continuity.
