About the position

The Mechanic II position at Hampton Roads Transit involves diagnosing vehicle malfunctions, performing preventive maintenance, and repairing various types of transit and support vehicles. This role requires a high level of technical proficiency in vehicle systems and components, ensuring safety and quality in all maintenance activities. The Mechanic II will work both in the field and at the Operations garage, handling major component overhauls and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose vehicle malfunctions and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Repair and overhaul various types of transit and support vehicles.
  • Conduct major component overhauls and rebuilds of systems such as brakes, suspension, fuel, and HVAC.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic equipment for accurate diagnosis and repair.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain proficiency in troubleshooting vehicle fuel delivery systems and air conditioning units.
  • Repair and adjust steering and suspension systems, brake systems, and multiplex systems.
  • Road test vehicles to ensure safety and quality of repairs.
  • Complete required documentation for work orders and maintenance activities.
  • Train other employees in fleet maintenance and safe operation of equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED required; trade school preferred.
  • Five years of heavy-duty mechanical experience within the past ten years or equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing all HRT vehicles.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written and electronic service information.
  • CDL Class B license or permit required, with the ability to acquire within 60 days of employment.
  • EPA Section 609 Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery Certification required within probation period.

Nice-to-haves

  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret maintenance manuals and electronic schematics.
  • Experience with OSHA safety standards and regulations.
