About The Position

The Materials Assistant reports to the North-East Assistant Branch Manager and works 20 hours per week. This role involves sorting and shelving library materials, managing the book drop, checking materials in and out, maintaining shelf order, and ensuring the general order and appearance of the library. The position also includes retrieving materials for staff and customers, processing daily POSH lists and collection maintenance lists, and maintaining positive customer relationships. Additionally, the Materials Assistant provides basic circulation and registration services, answers the telephone, and performs other related work and special projects as assigned. As the North-East branch is a designated United States Village Post Office, employees will also sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to learn filing order in Dewey Decimal classification system.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
  • Excellent physical stamina (virtually all duties require lifting, walking and/or standing).
  • Demonstrated ability to learn library operations and procedures.
  • Reliable knowledge of alphabet and numbers.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging job related technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to speak and understand English is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages used in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts and accurately shelves library materials.
  • Empties book drop.
  • Checks materials in; completes materials route ins.
  • Reads shelves for proper order of materials, shifting when necessary.
  • Maintains general order and appearance of library straightens shelves, when necessary; and clears tables.
  • Retrieves materials for staff and customers.
  • Processes daily POSH list.
  • Completes collection maintenance lists.
  • Maintains effective, courteous working relationships with all library customers.
  • Provides basic circulation and registration services to assure patrons ready access to library materials: Checks materials in and out; issues library cards; collects charges; updates customer records in the computer; verbally explains circulation policies and procedures; makes other computer inquiries; and processes patron requests for reserve items.
  • Courteously answers telephone by identifying self and location, and if unable to assist with the request, directs call to the appropriate staff person.
  • Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.
  • Sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes.
