About The Position

This is a safety-sensitive position that performs weed control of District canals, laterals, and ditches, along with minor mechanical and general maintenance services to keep the maintenance fleet operational. The role involves performing minor welding to ensure maintenance equipment is functional and conducting minor repairs or replacements of canal gates, structures, diversion dams, and flood control dams. The position reports to the Maintenance Foreman for assigned jobs, in cooperation with the Fabrication Foreman. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative and not all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least six (6) months of experience with basic weed control spraying, basic mechanical duties, tire service, and basic welding.
  • Knowledge of agricultural equipment is a must.
  • A valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing.
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • General office equipment and computer literacy a plus.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Understand and follow broad or complex instructions.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems when necessary.
  • Use initiative and independent judgment while recognizing when to refer matters to the attention of Management.
  • Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Pass post-offer, pre-employment drug screen, medical exam, and motor vehicle report in compliance with District insurance guidelines.

  • CDL and Spray License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor repairs on equipment throughout the District.
  • Monitor equipment performance and assist with preventative maintenance, making minor adjustments or replacements in the field, including minor tire repair, and reporting major problems to the Maintenance Foreman.
  • Assist mechanics in making minor repairs on other equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs and installation of turnouts, check structures, and other operational facilities in the assigned area.
  • Perform basic welding jobs and repairs related to maintenance requests.
  • Operate and maintain the assigned welding truck, ensuring adequate care and sufficient supplies.
  • Document all repairs and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Assist the Fabrication Foreman with maintenance jobs requiring additional knowledge and manpower, and with major welding jobs.
  • Maintain and log all work orders, both complete and incomplete.
  • Furnish the Maintenance Foreman with progress reports on assigned work orders.
  • Inspect, repair, and report any problems on the District system to prevent future breakdowns or damage.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance Foreman for major repairs to canal systems during the water season.
  • Comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Abide by all department and District policies and procedures.
  • Maintain attendance during scheduled shifts.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
