About The Position

Assist in performing maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment, move furniture, equipment, and building materials.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of full time (or part-time equivalent) building mechanical and/or building electrical work experience.
  • A final candidate must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical exam.
  • Employment is contingent on the successful result of the pre-employment physical.
  • Valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
  • Must acquire a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within first five (5) months of employment.
  • CDL license holder is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation: Manual dexterity needed to assist in repair of small machinery.
  • Occasional heavy physical exertion and climbing of stairs and ladders required.
  • Must be able to climb and be comfortable at heights of 40' or more and/or depths (pits, hoist-ways, etc).
  • Must be able to lift or handle 75 lbs unassisted a minimum of 2 flights of stairs and/or 300 feet.
  • Must be able to work both overhead (and lift weights of 60 lbs overhead for short periods of time) or on knees for extended periods of time.
  • Incumbent will encounter noise, dust, heat, cold and mud.
  • Work is completed outside in all kinds of weather, occasionally encountering potentially hazardous materials and equipment.
  • Applicants for this position must be authorized to work in the U.S. without ISU sponsorship.
  • Sponsorship for work authorization will not be considered for this position.

  • The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions.
  • If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score.
  • After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
  • Subject to a criminal background investigation and if applicable, an employment history review, based on University Policy 3.1.30 and any offer of employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation and/or an employment history review.
  • You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.

  • Basic knowledge of principles, materials and methods of building construction and repair of basic mechanical devices.
  • Prior maintenance and/or construction experience is essential.
