About the position

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic position is responsible for performing scheduled inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance on heavy equipment. This role requires the use of various hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments to ensure equipment operates efficiently and safely. The mechanic will troubleshoot issues, dismantle devices, and perform modifications as necessary, adhering to company guidelines and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance on heavy equipment.
  • Dismantle devices to access and remove defective parts using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examine parts for imperfections and inspect used parts for dimensional changes.
  • Read parts books and schematic drawings to determine necessary parts and work procedures.
  • Lubricate moving parts and operate repaired equipment to verify specifications.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic repairs on heavy equipment.
  • Set up and operate grinders and other metalworking tools for repairs.
  • Record hour meter readings for inspections and maintenance.
  • Take lube oil and cooling water samples for analysis.
  • Clean oil separator screens and lube oil strainers.
  • Check and repair air-fuel, oil, lube oil, water, and exhaust leaks.
  • Test safety equipment and perform modifications as required.
  • Repair and install mechanical units using hand tools and equipment.
  • Operate overhead cranes, truck cranes, forklifts, welding equipment, and cutting tools as needed.

Requirements

  • High school education or GED; or 3 to 6 months mechanical experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of and skills in using hand tools, power tools, and hydraulic tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and schematics.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to perform basic shop math and solve practical problems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with heavy equipment such as Dozers, Front End Loaders, and Track Hoes.
  • Familiarity with welding equipment and cutting tools.
