About The Position

The Maintenance Manager (Director of Maintenance) is responsible for developing and implementing the overall maintenance strategy for fleet and facilities to ensure safe, reliable transit operations. This role provides leadership and direction to maintenance supervisors and technical teams, establishes performance goals, and fosters a culture of safety and accountability. A key aspect of this role is managing the union relationship, understanding and monitoring compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and ensuring productive, win-win outcomes. The position also oversees preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs, manages maintenance schedules to maximize fleet availability, and oversees the maintenance of support facilities. Additionally, the Maintenance Manager monitors performance metrics, identifies trends for improvement, drives root cause analysis, and manages the annual maintenance operating and capital budgets. Compliance with regulatory requirements (FTA, DOT, OSHA) and safety programs is crucial, as is managing relationships with vendors and third-party maintenance providers. The role also involves overseeing the use and optimization of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and leveraging data analytics and emerging technologies, including those related to fleet electrification.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of vehicle, equipment, and hydraulic maintenance experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Maintenance Manager role in a Transit environment
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid MA driver license, CDL preferred
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Union and contract negotiation experience
  • Ability to work flexible schedules that may include nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Computer literate
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong organizational planning skills

Responsibilities
