A Machine Operator is a person trained in maintaining, controlling, and operating machines and equipment that are used in the manufacturing of products. The job description of an Operator entails operating high speed sophisticated machines by managing settings and conducting tests to ensure a successful operation in the production process. Test results are generated by utilizing standard machinery, materials, people, tools, equipment, and ISO/AS work instructions, assuring adherence to quality, continuous improvement and medical standards. Performs other duties as required but which comply with ADA. Have a working knowledge of the operation of the following machinery for the production of wire and cable products to specified tolerances. An Operator may be crossed trained on other operations or machinery. The following is a list but is not limited to: B62, 6 & 12 Bay Standers, Furnace #7, Electric Cutters.
A working knowledge is defined as: Knowing the proper way to move the equipment and set the equipment in-line. Properly hook up all necessary connections (air, water, lubrication, etc.). Install wire, wire rope, cable, and/or hardware for assemblies. Know all the controls and how to operate and adjust them (speeds, force, set and adjust cut length, end-cut squareness, control panels, temperatures, etc.). Know the safety features and danger areas of the equipment (pinch points, emergency stops, and safety switches, etc.).

Ability to stand, on average 95% of the time, running machines and/or using required equipment.

Cut strand or wire with cutters using approximately 5 to 25 pounds of downward pressure with momentum, 1 to 30+ times, per shift.
Lift machine covers to replace empty spools 30 to 50 times per shift, on average.
Able to change machines over which requires lifting a gear approximately 10 pounds, 2 to 3 times per shift.
Hand scale or spring scale placing and tension of material.
Grip and lift with hand or two hands 6'' spools weighing up to 13 pounds, 30 to 50 times per shift.
Larger spools are moved by rolling on the floor, 5 to 10 times per shift.
Able to take off take-up reels weighing approximately 1 to 30 pounds, 1 to 3 times per shift.
Load spools and reels onto payoffs and take-ups, requires downward force using a lever system and body weight, approximately 20 pounds of pressure, 2 to 3 times per shift, on average.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to input, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
Eye-hand-foot coordination essential.

Responsibilities

Ensure the work area is clean prior to starting an operation; as an operation progresses and work debris accumulates; when an operation cannot continue; after an operation is completed and prior to inspection and at the end of each shift. Maintain a clean and organized work area, by following daily housekeeping, PM's and FOD standards.
Complete any training needed to perform your essential duties. Any job-specific quality training deemed necessary by the quality department, including but not limited to, operation of job-specific machines, tools, measurements, gauges, workplace topics, procedures and practices.
Work with, and train new or transfer employees, sharing knowledge and expertise.

Inspect parts and/or products for surface quality, color, appearance, diameter and dimensions, as called for by specifications, work orders, prints and/ or management and bring all quality concerns to the attention of Supervision.
Timely and accurately provides technical/programming knowledge to obtain optimum production utilization and minimize scrap loss ensuring proper machine/equipment/people usage. Make necessary adjustments to correct quality defects after consulting with Supervision.
As part of maintenance measures, inspect equipment in use through troubleshooting, checking for any problems in them and fixing them or notifying Maintenance immediately if any, in order to prevent breakdown in the course of work.
Responsible for ensuring that prescribed protective equipment devices are used/worn. Observes safety and security procedures; advises Supervision/Management of potential and actual hazards/conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly at all times; Works in a manner that promotes prevention of accidents/ injuries/illness; practices good hygiene and takes every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of yourself and co-workers.
Responsible for ensuring practicing good personal hygiene. This means washing your hands especially, but also your body. It means being careful not to cough or sneeze on others, products and equipment while cleaning things that you touch if you are unwell, putting items such as tissues (that may have germs) into a bin, and using protection (like gloves or Purell) when you might be at risk of catching or spreading a virus. As well as wearing clean uniforms that are company issued.
Maintain documentation to ensure retrieval of data and protection of proprietary information. Records (paper or electronic) such as test records, Lotus, Visual (tags, issuing), WO, PO, PMs, logs, pick list, shipping advises and the like are required to prove conformity.
Properly complete, remove and/or generate new quality tags such as barcode, hold or RMA, etc. Ensure data entry is done in a timely manner.
Arrange machine at the beginning of work procedures to ensure that everything is in order including monitoring them for unusual noises or movements. Test the machine before main work begins to be sure that it’s in good condition for production. Set up all machine operation/assemblies and verify information such as hardware, speed, size and shape into machine before it begins running. Complete any necessary documentation.
Set up and operate machinery and production runs from work orders, engineering blueprints, production diagrams, assembly drawings, cable and hardware part number systems including first-piece approval verification to specifications, daily. Determine operating methods and sequences; lay outs, sets-ups of equipment, tools and fixtures to predetermined tolerances and lengths for production, development and run requirements. Insert all production materials in the various parts of the machine. Ensure that machines are calibrated and recalibrated before and after production procedures, where applicable.
Troubleshoot machine/production problems to determine actual faults. Strictly adhere to specifications and ensure good quality work. Ensure timely preparation and availability of all production materials to avoid shortage during production. Report to Supervision regularly, keeping them updated on production activities and progress. Review blueprint/work order to ensure accuracy in production tasks.
Monitor all activities going on, review them for accuracy, clarification, and verification. Discern process variations through periodic checks and make any necessary adjustments. While the machine is in operation, monitor it closely to detect any signs of malfunctioning that may affect the quality of work and tackle it immediately to avoid it getting worse or excessive scrap/waste. All Med Tech. machines manufacturing strand/wire/cable must use an alcohol wipe, unless specified differently on the work order or by Engineering.
Inspect all finished products, checking for production quality and standards. When it is noticed that some products are not within specification, they are reproduced to meet the set standards and/or disposition accordingly.
Put the previous job's completed order and documentation in the finished orders bin. Return the previous job's spec, tooling, excess packaging, check fixtures, and gauges back to their proper location when the job is finished.
May set up and make "first-article" check on difficult production runs. Includes supporting prototype development activities, working with engineers and mechanical designers on the design feasibility of prototype machine parts and assemblies relative to form, fit, function and cost.
Performs in-process inspections of all production orders, manufacturing processes, hardware manufacture, drawings, and sampling plans. Records and maintains all inspection and test data completing relevant inspection forms in compliance with Quality Assurance Manuals and department specifications.
Able to identify and respond to material/products that are non-conforming. Knows criteria for acceptance/rejection. Familiar with NMR, RMA’s, First Article Inspection, Disposition of Scrap or Expired Material, and the like, as applicable.
