About the position

The Machine Design - Lead Senior Engineer at Amentum is responsible for leading and managing complex machine design projects within a multi-discipline team. This role requires a high level of technical expertise and experience in machine design, ensuring client satisfaction while delivering projects on scope, budget, and schedule. The engineer will work on unique designs, often starting from a blank slate, and will be involved in various phases of engineering work, including planning, analysis, and coordination with other disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of engineering work.
  • Analyzes complex features of the work and applies machine design principles and practices.
  • Thoroughly reviews all results from assigned tasks to ensure completeness and correctness.
  • Develops and presents technical reports, 3D concepts, presentations, and calculations to project management and clients.
  • Coordinates and formally reviews the work of others for techniques and technical approach.
  • Evaluates and defines interfaces with other disciplines, working closely with various engineering teams.
  • Leads design team to produce complete design packages, including detailed drawings, calculations, and specifications.

Requirements

  • B.S.M.E. from an accredited engineering school
  • Minimum of twenty (20) years' relevant and progressive Machine Design experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading other engineers and designer/drafters
  • Strong mechanical engineering analytical skills - kinematics, dynamics, stress/strain, power transmission, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of common machine design elements: gears, bearings, belts, etc.
  • FEA - static stress-strain, natural frequency
  • Ability to successfully lead single discipline projects and teams of 3-10 people
  • Scope/Schedule/Budget management

Nice-to-haves

  • 3D CAD experience, Inventor or Solidworks preferred
  • FEA - thermal, non-linear, forced mode dynamics and multi-physics analysis, Ansys preferred
  • Design experience with ASME B&PV Section VII, Div I & Div II
  • Fluid Power - employing pneumatic/hydraulic cylinders, valve stand design, P&IDs, etc.
  • Basic experience with machine instrumentation
  • Design for fiber-composites manufacturing (fiberglass, carbon fiber)
