The Litigation Investigator position at Dependency Legal Services in San Diego, CA, involves conducting investigations related to child abuse allegations for the County of San Diego's Department of Children and Family Services. The role supports attorneys in preparing defense cases for Juvenile Dependency Court by performing fieldwork, gathering evidence, and compiling reports to ensure zealous representation of clients.

Responsibilities

  • Compile, analyze, and evaluate information to draw logical conclusions and make sound recommendations to attorneys.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and detailed written and oral reports.
  • Communicate effectively with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds in a non-judgmental and empathetic manner.
  • Conduct field investigations, including home assessments and safety evaluations.
  • Track down and obtain legal documents through various sources, including medical and court records.
  • Locate incarcerated clients and gather pertinent information for legal representation.
  • Prepare subpoenas for service, including medical records and witness testimonies.
  • Maintain proper record keeping, including timekeeping and case file records.
  • Communicate with local and county offices and international agencies to obtain case information.
  • Assist attorneys in interviewing clients and potential witnesses, and arrange interviews and court calls.
  • Translate for attorneys during client interactions.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or certification in a related field, or a minimum of three years of related paid employment experience.
  • Experience in interviewing and investigation methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and court procedures.
  • Understanding of human behavior, family dynamics, and child development.
  • Familiarity with community and court resources and organizations.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license and own vehicle with liability insurance.
