About the position

The Lineworker Apprentice 1B position at Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) is a foundational role designed for individuals looking to start their career in the electric utility industry. This position is primarily responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, construction, and repair of transmission and distribution systems. The apprentice will engage in various tasks that require physical stamina and a commitment to safety, as they will be working on de-energized poles and lines, climbing poles, and operating specialized equipment such as boom trucks and digger trucks. As part of the apprenticeship program, the selected candidate will be required to complete a training manual and attend climbing school within the first six months of employment. This training is crucial for progressing to the next level, Lineman Apprentice 2. The role demands a proactive approach to learning and adhering to safety regulations, as well as maintaining the cleanliness and security of the work vehicle and tools. The apprentice will also be expected to participate in emergency restoration efforts and be available for call-out duty, which may require working beyond standard hours. The work environment can be physically demanding, with exposure to various weather conditions and the necessity to lift heavy materials. The position emphasizes the importance of teamwork, communication, and customer service skills, as the apprentice will be working closely with experienced linemen and other team members to ensure the successful completion of projects.

Responsibilities

  • Climb poles and work on de-energized poles and lines
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with the operation and maintenance of the boom truck, digger and bucket truck and various pulling units
  • Assist in digging holes and setting poles
  • Assist experienced Linemen as needed
  • Study and complete training manual
  • Attend and successfully complete climbing school within six months of hire date
  • Participate in and successfully complete training as scheduled in order to progress to Lineman Apprentice 2 status
  • Demonstrate diligence in learning and adhering to safety regulations
  • Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle
  • Must be available for Call-Out duty
  • Operate equipment and hydraulic tamp
  • Prepare materials for each project including cutouts, arrestors and transformers
  • Load and unload vehicles
  • Prepare vehicles for daily projects
  • Clean cover up materials, repair, clean and inspect tools on the vehicles
  • Assist with material stocking, pulling of stock for projects
  • Maintain the security of confidential information
  • Stay abreast of advances in technology
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Department of Labor approved Apprenticeship Program requirements for Apprentice Level 1A
  • Valid Texas Class A CDL preferred
  • Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data or processing information
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
  • Skilled in time management
  • Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing and retain the information
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze and resolve conflict and problems
