About The Position

The Light Auto/Equipment Mechanic performs skilled automotive, truck, and equipment mechanical work approaching the journeyman level. An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, and specialized heavy equipment. The employee is responsible for diagnosing and executing repairs needed, reporting time and supplies used on each vehicle serviced or repaired, and ordering parts. The work is assigned by means of verbal and written orders and is carried out independently by the employee in accordance with standard practices of the trade.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience as a medium duty/heavy duty truck or heavy equipment mechanic
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license for equipment operated
  • Any license, training, or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks
  • Must provide a basic minimum set of mechanics tools as required by Fleet Management
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the mechanic's trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles and mechanics of all types of internal combustion engines and motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems operation.
  • Knowledgeable of diagnostic procedures for checking fluid flow rates, pressure settings, and associated adjustments.
  • Knowledge of air brake operating systems, diagnostic procedures, and performance standards.
  • Ability to perform a full brake overhaul in compliance with FMCSR requirements.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair defects in powered equipment.
  • Ability to keep simple records.
  • Ability to order parts for repairs.
  • Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems.
  • Ability to operate various powered equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools including air and electric powered wrenches, drills, and other standard tools and equipment of the mechanic’s trade.
  • Ability to recognize and correct potential sources of hazardous material spills.

Nice To Haves

  • All technicians must currently hold, or acquire the 609 HVAC Certification and Airbrake Certification provided by Fleet Management within one year of employment.
  • Achievement of highly related job skills (above basic requirements) will be provided compensation for skills mastered pursuant to the City of Pensacola Premium Pay Guidelines dated 10-1-2020.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates with supervisors, drivers, and equipment operators; to identify service needs, gather operational information, and accurately diagnose vehicle and equipment issues.
  • Performs preventive maintenance services and inspections; on City-owned automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other powered equipment in accordance with established schedules and manufacturer standards.
  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical systems; including engines, drivetrains, steering, suspension, and braking systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical and electronic systems; by troubleshooting defective wiring, components, and controls on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts mechanical repairs; on gasoline, compressed natural gas (CNG), and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment in accordance with quality standards and accepted practices of the trade.
  • Operates a wide range of shop tools and equipment; including hydraulic jacks, air- and electric-powered tools, bench grinders, brake lathes, and related diagnostic and repair equipment.
  • Drives service trucks and responds to road service calls; to perform on-site diagnostics and repairs, minimizing equipment downtime and service disruptions.
  • Performs minor fabrication and welding repairs; using electric arc and MIG welding equipment, acetylene torches, drill presses, grinders, and related tools as required.
  • Assists and collaborates with fellow technicians; by supporting diagnosis and repair efforts on light-duty vehicles and sharing technical knowledge as needed.
  • Maintains a safe, efficient work environment and documentation; by following safety procedures, maintaining work areas and tools, and performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
