About the position

The Lifeguard / Swim Instructor position for Fall 2024 at SUNY Cortland involves two primary roles: ensuring the safety of patrons at the Student Life Center Pool and Park Center Pools, and providing swim instruction to individuals of all ages. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for monitoring pool activities, enforcing safety rules, and performing life-saving techniques when necessary. You will also conduct pool chemistry tests and complete daily safety checks to maintain a secure environment for all users. This role requires a commitment to attend mandatory in-service training sessions and meetings as required by the Cortland County Health Department. In your capacity as a Swim Instructor, you will develop and deliver swim lessons that adhere to the standards set by the American Red Cross or equivalent accreditation. You will evaluate the performance and progress of participants, ensuring that all facility policies are followed. Effective communication with clients and their guardians is essential to provide a positive learning experience. The position requires flexibility in scheduling, with morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts available, as swim instruction must occur during the operational hours of the Student Life Center pool.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor patrons at the Student Life Center Pool and Park Center Pool to ensure safety and adherence to rules.
  • Test pool chemistry using provided testing equipment.
  • Complete daily safety checks for the pool and deck area.
  • Be prepared to perform life-saving techniques for patrons in distress.
  • Attend required in-service training sessions at least once per semester as mandated by the Cortland County Health Department.
  • Provide swim instruction to children and adults of all ages, following accredited guidelines.
  • Develop swim lesson plans in accordance with American Red Cross or equivalent standards.
  • Evaluate participant performance and progress during swim lessons.
  • Ensure compliance with facility policies and rules during swim instruction.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with clients and/or parents/guardians.

Requirements

  • Must be a current SUNY Cortland student.
  • Valid Lifeguard certification from Cortland County.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification completed within the last year.
  • Certification in Cortland County Approved Lifeguard.
