About the position

The position is responsible for overseeing the lifeguard program at the Aquatic Center, ensuring proper supervision, coordination of in-service training, and scheduling assignments under the direction of the Aquatic Center Coordinator. The role includes ensuring compliance with swimming pool operation, safety, and maintenance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold and enforce Aquatic Center rules, administration regulations, and state and local board policy.
  • Assign, supervise, and evaluate lifeguards, ensuring the pool area is monitored at all times.
  • Review scheduled activities for the Aquatic Center to ensure appropriate lifeguard scheduling according to safety and compliance standards.
  • Ensure all pool procedures are followed for reporting accidents and notifications.
  • Review pool rules and provide interpretation and enforcement techniques for lifeguards.
  • Interpret professional standards for lifeguarding and current trends in water safety associations and the ARC lifeguard program.
  • Inspect and assure the professional appearance of lifeguards.
  • Ensure the quality and quantity of First Aid and emergency supplies, as well as area neatness.
  • Monitor pool operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Monitor appropriate notices regarding pool rules and safety procedures for use.
  • Schedule ARC lifeguard in-service training and keep records of staff certification status.
  • Assist with the design of the users safety education program.
  • Communicate and serve as a liaison between lifeguard staff and management.
  • Ensure compliance with state, local, and federal codes in cooperation with the Lead Instructor and Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Communicate with the public, students, parents, administrators, and other pool users in a tactful, effective, and professional manner.
  • Act properly and swiftly in the event of an incident or emergency.
  • Know and enforce all pool rules and policies, performing lifeguarding duties when needed.
  • Help manage behavior of students, intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
  • Protect pool facility and equipment.
  • Use First Aid knowledge and techniques to give emergency First Aid and assist individuals with special needs as needed.
  • Maintain physical fitness and lifeguarding skills through scheduled training.
  • Participate in special events as assigned and follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality and a high level of ethical behavior as expected of all District employees.
  • Maintain professional growth by attending in-service and meetings as requested/required.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Aquatic Center Coordinator.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required in English.
  • Two (2) years of related experience required, which may include work in church-related schools, day camps, youth groups, private schools, community centers, or similar experiences acceptable to the District.
  • Current certification in First Aid and Safety, CPR or CPR for the professional, and Lifeguard certification program required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Water Safety Instructor and/or Instructor Trainer is preferred.
