About the position

This position is located in the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 4, Water Division, specifically within the Surface Water Protection Branch. The role involves serving as a technical advisor and TMDL Coordinator, focusing on the assessment of water quality and providing guidance to states regarding Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). The position requires regular physical attendance at the duty station, although there are work-from-home and flexible scheduling options available.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical advisor to the Section Supervisor and Branch Supervisor.
  • Evaluate and document a variety of environmental and human health data/data sources for water quality assessment.
  • Act as the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) Coordinator for assigned states, providing technical guidance and assistance as needed.
  • Provide expertise on the TMDL program.
  • Spend less than 25% of work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines; or a combination of education and experience with relevant courses.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level, including analyzing and interpreting statutes and regulations related to the Clean Water Act and providing guidance on impaired water-bodies.
  • Knowledge of the Clean Water Act and skill in reviewing plans and policies for water quality improvement.
  • Ability to manage assessment databases and advise officials on water quality standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in collaborating with federal, tribal, state, and local officials on water quality issues.
  • Skill in written communication.
