About The Position

THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL EXAM - YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY Qualified applicants must be current county employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Wednesday, June 17, 2026. A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP-UP appointments. ABOUT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for its law enforcement services, its Regional Training Center, and its Dispatch Unit; the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board for its Crime Lab; the Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board for its Explosive Ordinance Unit. Additionally, the agency's health care provider, Wellpath, has experience working with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). The Sheriff's Office has a current budget of approximately $600 million and has over 1600 authorized positions, including in excess of 1000 sworn personnel. The agency's Chief Executive Officer is Sheriff / Coroner Yesenia L. THE POSITION Under general direction, to administer a Community Re-entry Center, a Planning and Research Unit, a Criminal Investigation Unit, a Central Identification Bureau, a Records, Warrants, Dispatch and Crime Analysis Unit, or a Coroner’s Bureau; to assist in the administration and management of a large detention facility or substation; to perform a particular assignment in the Civil and Court functions; to perform staff inspection services, making complete investigations and necessary reports regarding department policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Sheriff; to perform in specific roles for contract services as directed by the Sheriff; and to perform staff administrative duties and related work as required. Requirements

  • Must be a current Alameda County employee
  • Completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Wednesday, June 17, 2026
  • Completed their probationary period as a Sergeant in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office
  • Equivalent of eighteen months of experience in the class of Sergeant with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office OR A minimum of four years of California law enforcement experience at the rank of Sergeant or above, and possession of a Supervisory Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
  • Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator’s license

Responsibilities

  • Administer a Community Re-entry Center, a Planning and Research Unit, a Criminal Investigation Unit, a Central Identification Bureau, a Records, Warrants, Dispatch and Crime Analysis Unit, or a Coroner’s Bureau
  • Assist in the administration and management of a large detention facility or substation
