About the position

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) position at the Veterans Health Administration involves providing essential mental health services to eligible Veterans, active duty service members, and their families. The role focuses on readjustment counseling, community outreach, and care coordination, ensuring that individuals facing military-related psychological and psychosocial challenges receive appropriate support and interventions. The counselor will work within a multidisciplinary team to enhance the well-being and independence of clients through comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, and direct counseling services.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake screening and assessment for clients, including risk assessments and documentation of behaviors or symptoms.
  • Develop and update individualized readjustment counseling service plans with achievable goals and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide direct readjustment counseling services, incorporating complex psychosocial assessments and diagnostic inferences.
  • Conduct risk assessments and crisis interventions for Veterans in distress, initiating safety planning as needed.
  • Coordinate care by linking Veterans with community services and resources to enhance their health and independence.
  • Maintain active coordination with outreach workers to ensure seamless referrals to counseling services.
  • Participate in staff meetings to promote team cohesion and professional development.
  • Document all clinical interactions and care coordination activities as required by policy.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this position.
  • A Master's or doctoral degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or a related field from an accredited program is necessary.
  • A full, current, and unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor is required for GS-11 level; GS-9 may be unlicensed but must be working towards licensure.
  • Knowledge of current DSM for formulating treatment goals and applying clinical interventions is essential.
  • Ability to engage in intake and assessment, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up is required.
  • Experience in providing individual, group, or family counseling interventions with sensitivity to diversity is necessary.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in crisis intervention and stabilization for patients in psychological distress.
  • Advanced knowledge of counseling processes and the ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues.
  • Skills in developing and facilitating psychotherapy and psycho-education groups.
