About The Position

Library volunteers play a vital role in supporting lifelong learning, literacy, and student success in the San Bernardino community. Under the guidance of Library staff, volunteers assist with Adult Literacy Tutoring directly engaging with learners to build skills and confidence. These roles are ideal for individuals who enjoy working with the public, believe in the power of education, and want to give back through consistent, hands-on service. Library staff provide all training and materials, making this a great opportunity for both first-time and experienced volunteers. This is a rewarding way to make a lasting difference in the lives of others, one book, one question, and one connection at a time.

Requirements

  • Must be a dedicated adult volunteer.
  • Must be able to commit 5–10 hours per month for at least 6 months.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check before the start date.
  • Must submit an online application through the City’s official website at www.sbcity.org.
  • Must fully complete the application and clearly demonstrate that the minimum qualifications are met.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting adult learners.
  • Prior volunteer or community-based service.
  • Background in education, tutoring, ESL, or adult-education environments.
  • Coursework in English, literacy, communication, or related fields from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with Adult Literacy Tutoring directly engaging with learners to build skills and confidence.
  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with adults from diverse backgrounds to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and digital literacy skills.
  • Help adults read more fluently, practice writing skills, or navigate basic computer tasks.
