About the position

The Library Service Clerk position at the Central Library Circulation Services Department involves assisting library customers with circulation processes, ensuring materials are returned and organized, and supporting daily operations under the supervision of Library Service Associates, Librarians, and Managers. This part-time role requires strong customer service skills and the ability to perform various tasks related to library operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general circulation and customer service functions, including checking in and out library materials.
  • Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Prepare and process delivery among library locations and manage holds.
  • Use the Library catalog or circulation system to search for items.
  • Register users and process new library card applications accurately.
  • Answer basic customer questions and refer advanced inquiries to appropriate staff.
  • Assist customers in finding specific items on shelves and provide computer assistance.
  • Maintain the order and neatness of collections throughout the Library by re-shelving materials and ensuring correct order on shelves.
  • Assist library staff with branch or department functions and promote library programs.
  • Attend and participate in staff and departmental meetings and training sessions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform accurate cash handling and sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order.
  • Ability to re-shelve returned materials quickly and correctly, achieving specified speed and accuracy rates.
  • Ability to represent the Library in a professional manner and establish cooperative relationships with staff and customers.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
  • Basic computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing, and email.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with library specific software programs and databases.
  • Familiarity with Automated Materials Handling systems.
