About the position

The Library Assistant position is a part-time role focused on providing excellent customer service and support within the library environment. The assistant will be responsible for sorting and shelving books, maintaining the organization of library materials, and assisting patrons with their inquiries and needs. This role requires flexibility in scheduling, including evenings and weekends, and involves physical tasks such as lifting and maneuvering among shelves.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts books into categories and shelves library materials.
  • Reads shelves and maintains the appearance of book shelves.
  • Assists clerical staff with processing books, including taping spine labels and making copies.
  • Assists with library programs and events.
  • Staffs service areas as needed and helps set up meeting rooms.
  • Maintains the appearance of the area, keeping it neat and organized.
  • Provides customer service by assisting patrons with material selection and answering reader's advisory questions.
  • Assists patrons with Internet searches and electronic databases.
  • Processes library materials and prepares book holds, intra-library loans, and inter-library loans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Excellent internal and external customer service skills.
  • Experience operating a computer, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to alphabetize.
  • Ability to maneuver among high and low shelves.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including pushing heavy carts and lifting up to 40 lbs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous library experience.
