About the position

Wichita Public Library is seeking a dedicated and bilingual Library Assistant for the Evergreen Branch. This part-time position is essential for providing customer assistance across various library services, both in-person and via telephone. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including circulation tasks, reader's advisory, public computing support, and basic reference services. The Library Assistant will also be involved in branch operations, which include cash handling, shelving, shelf-reading, collection maintenance, and assisting patrons with public computer needs. The selected candidate will be expected to perform miscellaneous duties as assigned, ensuring a smooth operation of library services. The ideal candidate must be fluent in both English and Spanish, demonstrating a strong customer service orientation. Excellent searching skills and computer competency are essential, as the Library Assistant will assist patrons with basic technology needs, including computers, e-readers, and tablets. The ability to learn and implement City and Library policies and procedures is also crucial. While the position is primarily based at the Evergreen Branch, the Library Assistant may be required to cover shifts at other locations as needed. The working hours for this part-time position vary throughout the year. From September to May, the schedule includes shifts on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 4:15 PM to 8:15 PM, every other Tuesday from 4:15 PM to 8:15 PM, and every other weekend on Saturday from 9:45 AM to 6:15 PM and Sunday from 12:45 PM to 5:15 PM. During the summer months of June to August, the hours shift to Monday through Thursday from 4:15 PM to 8:15 PM and every other Saturday from 9:45 AM to 6:15 PM.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer assistance in all aspects of library service in person and by telephone.
  • Perform reference and/or circulation work.
  • Plan, prepare, and present programs.
  • Assist with maintenance of collection, including shelving, sorting, and checking items in and out.
  • Prepare displays for library materials.
  • Provide basic reader's advisory services.
  • Oversee a section or branch library as assigned.
  • Mend and process library materials.
  • Perform clerical work as needed.
  • Assist customers with basic technology needs, including computers and e-readers.
  • Assist customers with the use of library services.
  • Serve on system-wide committees as assigned.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing of a section or branch as assigned.
  • Oversee the work of volunteers.
  • Travel to different work sites as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Fluency in both written and oral English and Spanish.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
  • Knowledge of standard library principles, practices, and methods.
  • Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations and office software.
  • Ability to sort and file items according to established procedures.
  • Ability to manually count back change and follow simple instructions.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to push a loaded book cart weighing up to 250 pounds and reach, bend, stoop, or squat to arrange books on shelves.
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with associates and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year experience working in a library or bookstore.
  • Familiarity with library software systems (e.g., Polaris, Sierra, or Koha).
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System or library cataloging methods.
