About the position

The Library Assistant II position at the Yankee Clipper Branch is a part-time role focused on providing paraprofessional and customer service support to patrons of the Grand Rapids Public Library. The primary responsibility is to assist library users in accessing resources, both in-person and through various communication channels. This role emphasizes youth services, requiring a passion for working with children, teens, and families, and involves engaging with the public through programs and storytime activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct public service to library patrons in-person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Assist patrons with basic account management, reference services, and technology support.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate public service.
  • Develop relationships with families and build community among program participants.
  • Represent the library at community events and outreach opportunities.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of programs and services.
  • Perform general administrative duties, including cash handling and supply orders.
  • Collect, compile, and report statistics related to library resources and programs.
  • Ensure the maintenance and accessibility of the library's collection.
  • Manage patron expectations and behavior in public spaces.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
  • 2 years of customer service experience, library experience, or office experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous public library experience is preferred.
  • Experience in early childhood learning and literacy.
