About the position

The Legal General Counsel for the Indiana Disability Rights (IDR) will ensure compliance with complex state and federal laws while providing legal advocacy for individuals with disabilities. This role involves supervising legal staff, managing litigation, and advising on policy matters, all while fostering partnerships with various stakeholders to promote the rights and interests of people with disabilities in Indiana.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff providing legal services for the agency including attorneys and non-attorney advocates.
  • Oversee agency case management policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and/or supervise the handling of litigation and legal representation.
  • Consult with staff and provide guidance in the investigation of legal facts relating to client rights concerns.
  • Manage litigation involving the IPAS Commission utilizing associational standing.
  • Provide legal assistance in drafting legal documents, agency policy, and legislation.
  • Advise on legislative and policy matters as directed.
  • Monitor legal trends and case law that could impact the agency or the people served.
  • Serve as a representative of IDR at meetings and public presentations.
  • Assist in the development of IDR's priorities and objectives.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience managing litigation, especially in disability and civil rights laws.
  • Admitted to practice law in Indiana or ability to seek admission upon hiring.
  • Ability to pass federal security suitability clearance and a state background check.
  • Advanced knowledge of civil rights law, administrative law, and the legislative process.
  • Ability to supervise others and conduct employee evaluations.
