About the position

As the Leave of Absence and Accommodations Specialist at MathWorks, you will manage and administer leave requests and accommodations, particularly under various federal and state laws. This role involves ensuring compliance with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Massachusetts Paid Family & Medical Leave Act (MA PFML), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other relevant regulations. You will serve as a subject matter expert, guiding staff through the leave process and maintaining accurate records while supporting a collaborative and process improvement-oriented culture.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer leaves of absence, accommodations, and workers' compensation.
  • Communicate with staff regarding their need for leave and modified work schedules, ensuring awareness of responsibilities and documentation requirements.
  • Review medical documentation and follow up with healthcare providers as appropriate.
  • Make approval recommendations and determinations for leaves, leave extensions, and accommodations.
  • Coordinate and approve return from leave, including necessary accommodations.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for leaves and accommodations, consulting with HR business partners and management.
  • Administer leaves and leave returns within Workday, ensuring accurate flow to payroll.
  • Guide and engage in the interactive process for determining reasonable accommodations.
  • Maintain complete, timely, and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with company policy and laws.
  • Guide staff in the claim filing process for state leave programs, long-term disability, workers' compensation, and life insurance claims.
  • Create and analyze reports to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Recommend and draft revisions to company leave policies and best practices.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of leave requirements and legal protections under FMLA, MA PFML, ADA, and other applicable laws.
  • Experience administering leaves of absence and ADA accommodations.
  • Excellent judgment, troubleshooting, problem-solving, analysis, and discretion.
  • Ability to handle complex and difficult conversations.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information and maintain privacy.
  • Experience outsourcing some functions of leave administration is a plus.
  • Experience with Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) and reporting tools, with specific experience in Workday being a plus.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
