Lead Route Driver - Duluth, MN

About the position

The Lead Route Driver is responsible for leading a group of Route Drivers in their day-to-day duties. This position involves completing routes for employees who are absent, assisting drivers with daily morning duties such as sorting freight and loading trucks, and delivering and picking up freight in a timely manner from customers and shippers. The Lead Route Driver will also inspect and report any mechanical problems with the vehicle, load the truck in an organized manner, collect payments for certain packages delivered, and maintain a professional appearance.

Responsibilities

• Complete routes for employees who are absent
• Assist drivers with daily morning duties such as sorting freight, loading trucks and other duties as needed
• Assist with the initial training period of new drivers
• Deliver and pick up freight in a timely manner from customers and shippers
• Inspect and report any mechanical problems with the vehicle
• Load the truck in an organized manner to effectively use space and prevent damage to packages
• Collect payments for certain packages delivered
• Verify the content of pickups on shipping papers
• Notify management of any problems or discrepancies
• Maintain professional personal appearance as well as cleanliness of vehicle
• Participate in weekly meetings and communicate goals and assignments
• Travel may be required
• Perform other required duties as assigned

Requirements

• At least 21 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Hold a valid Driver's License with a good driving record which meets company standards
• Ability to operate a manual transmission, or have the willingness to learn
• Must possess good customer service and organizational skills
• Must have leadership skills and the ability to make quick decisions
