About The Position

This position assists in nutrition services to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize educational opportunities for each child. The role involves managing multiple tasks, operating a point-of-sale system, handling basic accounting duties, and ensuring compliance with federal Child Nutrition guidelines. The assistant works with school staff and the Nutrition Office to address student accounts, allergies, and intolerances, and assists with food preparation and service at satellite locations. Communication with various school personnel and accurate record-keeping are essential. The position requires adherence to sanitation guidelines and completion of assigned training.

Requirements

  • Physically able to work in a standing position for prolonged periods and to walk much of the time during the day.
  • Must be able to read recipes and follow instructions for food preparation.
  • Able to tolerate a warm, noisy work environment.
  • Maintains high standards of personal hygiene and job performance.
  • Is honest and dependable and is discreet in regard to information concerning school children and staff.
  • Must have manual dexterity to handle knives and other pieces of equipment.
  • Is able to work calmly and complete jobs in a timely manner, even under sometimes stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle for required travel.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with required district, department, and federal Child Nutrition policies, health standards, and sanitation procedures.
  • Follow attendance rules and absence notification procedures.
  • Practice good personal hygiene.
  • Manage multiple tasks and use time efficiently.
  • Operate the point-of-sale computer system as cashier during serving times and perform basic accounting duties.
  • Take deposits to the bank per district protocols.
  • Follow federal Child Nutrition guidelines for privacy and handling of free and reduced student data.
  • Work with school staff and Nutrition Office personnel to address negative accounts and notify families of negative balances.
  • Identify students with allergies and intolerances and ensure they are served appropriate substitutions.
  • Double check trays when checking students out to ensure no restricted items were received.
  • Assist with final preparation, assembly, and portioning of menu items at satellite locations.
  • Serve some menu items during meal service.
  • Restock serving lines along with the server.
  • Ensure the server is correctly portioning and serving all menu items.
  • Properly use food service satellite equipment including convection or microwave ovens, steam tables, cold serving tables, hot carts, and other equipment.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Maintain district email account and check regularly for correspondence.
  • Communicate with building administration, Nutrition Office, production kitchen, school secretary, nurse, and other personnel as needed on food or student issues.
  • Perform with accuracy mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Complete assigned paperwork, including portion sheets and sanitation/temperature records.
  • Be courteous and respectful to all customers and co-workers.
  • Follow established sanitation guidelines for both food preparation and clean-up and perform clean-up duties as assigned.
  • Ensure school kitchen and food service areas are properly cleaned and sanitized each day prior to leaving.
  • Attend and complete district assigned training, which may include online or in-person training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
