About the position

The Lead Guidance Counselor at Ferris High School is responsible for providing students, parents, administrators, and other teaching staff with information on career and educational opportunities. This role involves administering and interpreting career assessment tools and assisting students in developing educational and occupational goals and plans. The counselor will work under the general supervision of the Director of Pupil Services.

Responsibilities

  • Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
  • Works with students in developing education and occupation plans consistent with evaluations.
  • Assists students in making course and subject selections and evaluating career interests and choices.
  • Assists in the scheduling of classes.
  • Obtains and disseminates information regarding occupational opportunities to students and classes studying occupations.
  • Assists students with admissions, scholarships, and identifying employment opportunities.
  • Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs.
  • Researches educational and career opportunities and coordinates with teachers, college personnel, resource specialists, and business organizations.
  • Assists with the registration and orientation of new students regarding procedures and educational opportunities.
  • Assists with the school district's dropout prevention efforts.
  • Serves as a resource to students to provide counseling for personal growth and self-understanding.
  • Plans and coordinates field trips to institutions of higher learning and businesses.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, and research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate record-keeping and providing student information to colleges and employers.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication.
  • Assists in the orientation of new teachers and provides in-service training in guidance.

Requirements

  • State Certification as a Guidance Counselor.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
