About the position

The Lead Guidance Counselor for the 2025-2026 school year will provide a comprehensive guidance program for students, which includes guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support components as outlined in the South Carolina Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model. The counselor will consult with administration, teachers, parents, and staff to enhance effectiveness in helping students and provide support and assistance to other educational programs within the school and district.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the South Carolina Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model for the high school guidance program through classroom guidance, individual and group counseling, and infusion in content areas.
  • Counsel individuals and groups of students toward the promotion of academic growth and career development.
  • Monitor student academic performance, and verify requirements for graduation.
  • Counsel and guide students in developing and updating an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP).
  • Counsel individuals and small groups of students toward personal/social and emotional growth in assisting students to set realistic goals.
  • Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students and to enhance their effectiveness in helping students.
  • Refer students to special programs, specialists, and/or community agencies, and consult with parents regarding referrals when appropriate.
  • Participate in, coordinate, and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school.
  • Participate in the intervention-team process and/or the school's student support team in development of realistic interventions to meet student needs.
  • Plan and evaluate the counseling program.
  • Pursue continuous professional growth and development through workshops, lectures, and institutes to enhance job performance.

Requirements

  • Possess a current and valid South Carolina certification in Guidance and Counseling at specific level.
  • Have a working knowledge and understanding of the components of the South Carolina Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board and/or administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
