Lead Engineer - Hardware Platform (Camera Cloud & Edge)

Hudl
$132,000 - $220,000Hybrid

About The Position

Hudl is seeking a Lead Engineer to autonomously own a core technical system of their camera platform, which powers approximately 10,000 smart cameras deployed worldwide. This role involves developing software for complex distributed systems that must remain synchronized with physical hardware across unreliable networks and unpredictable conditions. The Lead Engineer will set the technical direction, deliver on a 6-12 month roadmap, and navigate ambiguity to become the key technical anchor for their squad. This position requires close collaboration with engineering and product leadership, understanding the 'why' behind decisions to empower the team, and taking ownership of critical components of Hudl's core foundation to ensure consistent value delivery for stakeholders and customers.

Requirements

  • Autonomous systems ownership: Proven experience owning a production technical system end-to-end, including setting its direction, delivering against a multi-month roadmap, and making independent decisions under open-ended requirements.
  • Distributed systems depth: Understanding of why systems break at scale, including familiarity with state, consistency, failure modes, and unreliable networks.
  • Hardware or IoT (Internet of Things) experience: Experience building software that communicates with physical devices (cameras, sensors, embedded systems) and an understanding of the differences between cloud assumptions and hardware reality.
  • Operational ownership: Experience leading production incident response and owning the reliability of shipped software, including monitoring, runbooks, and toil reduction.
  • Team leadership: Ability to set the quality bar through reviews, mentor less-experienced engineers, and drive cross-group initiatives requiring influence without authority.
  • AI-augmented development: Experience using tools like Claude Code or GitHub Copilot as a force multiplier, with the judgment to evaluate output quality, and an understanding of their potential beyond code generation.
  • Experience as a change agent: A track record of entering teams and systems, understanding the current state, identifying opportunities for improvement, and driving positive change.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in AWS IoT Core, particularly with device communication or fleet monitoring at scale.
  • Experience using video pipeline tools such as GStreamer, HLS, or WebRTC.
  • Familiarity with the company's stack: .NET Core, Python, MongoDB/DocDB, Redis, and RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with field hardware support, including firmware updates, remote diagnostics, and connectivity triage.

Responsibilities

  • Own a system end-to-end, defining and delivering the technical roadmap for a multi-phase area, refining it as it evolves and resolving cross-group dependencies before they become blockers.
  • Preemptively identify and resolve technical risks, and drive urgency and ownership of resolution within the domain when incidents occur.
  • Proactively improve the system by addressing operational pain and tech debt, and building tooling, libraries, and runbooks to eliminate them for everyone.
  • Set the standard for quality through code reviews, design reviews, and mentorship, and level up the engineers around you.
  • Roll out major features at scale with monitoring, telemetry, and failure domains understood upfront as a complete system.
  • Iterate on team workflows and improve processes to drive better outcomes, thinking in terms of process and systems beyond just shipping code.
