About the position

The Lawyer Supervisor position within the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) at the Montana Department of Justice is responsible for overseeing the Consumer Protection Unit. This role involves directing, assigning, and supervising the activities of compliance specialists and volunteers, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws related to consumer protection. The incumbent will engage in investigations, legal enforcement actions, public outreach, and collaboration with various stakeholders to uphold consumer rights and public safety.

Responsibilities

  • Direct, assign, and supervise the activities of the Consumer Protection Unit.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal laws by investigating unlawful or deceptive acts or practices.
  • Conduct informal dispute resolutions and pursue formal legal enforcement actions as necessary.
  • Investigate complaints regarding the Unauthorized Practice of Law in Montana.
  • Represent the Tow Truck Resolution Committee in contested case proceedings.
  • Participate in multistate working groups on consumer issues affecting Montanans.
  • Conduct outreach and public education to consumers and businesses, creating educational materials and media content.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor Degree.
  • Admission to and maintenance of licensure from the State Bar of Montana.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • At least two years of specialized law and litigation experience.
  • Ability to become licensed to practice law in Montana within one year if licensed in another state.
  • Eligible to be admitted to practice in federal and state courts as needed.
  • Knowledge of personnel procedures, policies, and management practices.
  • Superior knowledge of Montana law and applicable legal procedures.
  • Skilled in legal research and writing, including citation format.

Nice-to-haves
