About the position

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is seeking a Landscape Mechanic to join the Facilities Management and Planning Department. Under the general direction of the landscape services manager, the Landscape Mechanic III will perform maintenance and repairs on various types of equipment used in landscaping, construction, waste management, irrigation, snow removal, and other related duties. This role involves conducting both minor fixes and major overhauls on all machinery and equipment within the department. The Landscape Mechanic will work on engines (gasoline, diesel, and electric), transmissions, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC systems, suspension, drive trains, brakes, tires, bodywork, and other related equipment. Additionally, the position includes repairing or replacing landscape fixtures like fences, benches, and exterior signs, supervising and training equipment operators, generating work orders, maintaining detailed records of repairs, and developing a preventive maintenance schedule for department equipment. The position requires the operation and upkeep of the street sweeper as needed and may involve call back for any grounds-related emergencies and assisting in snow and ice removal.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical issues and malfunctions in landscaping and grounds equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on landscaping and ground equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and other related equipment.
  • Maintain and repair vehicles used in the department including trucks, utility vehicles, street sweeper, and trailers.
  • Supervise and collaborate with department members for maintenance schedules and prioritize repairs.
  • Manage inventory of spare parts and supplies necessary for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts used for each piece of equipment and vehicle.
  • Subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies and needed coverage.
  • Assist in snow and ice removal from steps, sidewalks, parking lots, and drives using manual and powered equipment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized vocational technical school.
  • Two years motor vehicle or small engine repair experience.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the preventive maintenance and repair of landscape, construction, refuse, irrigation, and snow removal equipment.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Welding experience.
