Indian River State College is seeking a proactive and detail-driven Laboratory Manager to support biological science instruction across our campuses. Under direct supervision, the Laboratory Manager oversees day-to-day operations for biology-related laboratories, including microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, tissue culture, and related disciplines. You will coordinate laboratory preparation, manage inventory and budgets, maintain compliance with safety standards, and ensure equipment and materials are ready to support instructional needs. JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for preparing science laboratories. Possible disciplines include biotechnology, biology, microbiology, and chemistry. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials support laboratory operations, and facilitates communication within the School of Science and mathematics. Additional duties include assisting with laboratory equipment maintenance, managing inventory and requisitioning supplies in accordance with college procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a science discipline
  • Experience with common techniques used in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and Tissue Culture
  • Experience preparing laboratory solutions and reagents in accordance with established protocols and safety standards
  • Minimum one (1) year of proven laboratory work experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting day-to-day laboratory operations in an academic or research setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Windows-based applications, and cloud-based collaboration tools
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy and organization
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others and be self-motivated
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with diverse populations including students faculty, staff, and supervisors/administrators
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Meet weekly with faculty and other lab managers to discuss upcoming laboratory activities and instructional needs
  • Ensure each lab classroom is fully prepared, organized, and stocked at the start of each day. Anticipate and prepare the needs of evening lab section needs before leaving each day. Respond to last-minute laboratory needs, unexpected issues, and shifting priorities in a timely and professional manner
  • Monitor laboratory inventory using a computer spreadsheet to ensure required materials are available for upcoming coursework and requisition supplies as needed with the dean’s approval
  • Assist in preparing the annual laboratory budget proposal
  • Maintain a “wish list” of supplies and equipment
  • Ensure material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)s are available, maintained, and up-to-date for each lab
  • Instruct, coordinate, and supervise the activities of lab assistants in laboratory setup, material and chemical preparation, and instrumentation use and care, including monitoring assistant hours
  • Provide appropriate safety guidance and address safety and anti-theft concerns
  • Assist in laboratory equipment maintenance and repair, including coordination with the college’s maintenance department and third-party service vendors
  • Maintain the laboratories in a clean, neat, organized and healthful condition conducive to learning
  • Assist in preparing laboratory teaching materials, including demonstrations, video recording/taping, and procuring audio-visuals
  • Facilitate effective communication within the division using memos, cloud-based collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, One Drive, and Excel, E-mail and telephone correspondence
  • Travel between campuses as needed to support laboratory setup and assist other laboratory managers
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned
