Responsibilities

  • Assess, accession, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing.
  • Safely handle potentially infectious blood, body fluids, and other patient specimens in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Assess suitability and acceptability of patient specimens and reject unacceptable specimens according to established protocols.
  • Match order information with specimen information to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  • Accession and result specimens according to procedure via appropriate computer application.
  • Correctly assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers.
  • Verify physician orders when test requests are unclear.
  • Prepare specimens as appropriate including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  • Deliver prepared specimens to appropriate testing area in a timely manner.
  • Apply laboratory internet programs to store specimens and to locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing as requested.
  • Maintain computer logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and departmental assigned duties.
  • Manage phone inquiries and provide information regarding specimen collection, transport, and patient results as appropriate.
  • Assist with packaging ordering and referral of specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with regulations.
  • Troubleshoot missing specimens and other preanalytical errors including courier log review and specimen archives.
  • Maintain equipment and participate in established preventative maintenance program, alerting supervisor of any equipment problems.
  • Assist in proper handling, storage, and maintenance of supplies, notifying supervisor when inventory is low.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Entry-level position requiring under 1 year of experience.
