About the position

The Lab Technician position at BP Americas, Inc. in the Cherry Point Refinery is a critical role focused on ensuring product quality and environmental compliance through chemical and biological analysis of petroleum products, compressed gases, and wastewater. The technician will be responsible for conducting tests, maintaining laboratory equipment, and adhering to safety and regulatory standards while supporting the operational and strategic goals of the refinery and laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and support the day-to-day operational and longer-term strategic goals of the refinery and laboratory.
  • Practice safe lab work with a proactive approach to raising and resolving issues.
  • Safely sample various product streams in the field.
  • Understand and follow ASTM and regulatory test methods.
  • Provide prompt and accurate testing of routine and non-routine samples following required methods/standards.
  • Take ownership of test results and accurately enter them into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Understand analytical data generated and perform troubleshooting as needed.
  • Proactively communicate unusual observations during sample analysis to flag potential issues and assist in troubleshooting.
  • Perform required retesting and communicate off-specification product results.
  • Follow instrument performance-monitoring checks ensuring accurate records as part of the laboratory's SQC system.
  • Act as a laboratory instrument owner responsible for maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and minor repairs of equipment.
  • Participate in routine proficiency testing and ongoing training programs.
  • Be self-directed with a high level of initiative and accountability for achieving goals and tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to complete tasks and achieve goals.
  • Assist laboratory chemists and supervisors in developing new test procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong analytical chemistry skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to write procedures (standard work instructions) and train others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications with intermediate computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Knowledge of SQC methods.
  • Ability to work a rotating 12-hour shift schedule with required overtime.
  • Ability to climb ladders/stairs to a height of 50 feet and lift at least 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work alone without supervision during the shift.
  • Ability to move through the lab technician progression within the targeted timeframe.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in a petroleum or environmental laboratory.
  • Knowledge of petroleum testing and specification.
