About the position

The Lab Technician position at Genesis Health System involves the proficient procurement of blood samples from patients of all ages, utilizing both venous and capillary techniques. The role requires the use of a Laboratory Information System for managing laboratory orders and results, as well as educating patients on specimen collection. The technician will process specimens, perform laboratory tests under supervision, and maintain accurate records, all while working in a fast-paced environment that prioritizes patient care.

Responsibilities

• Procure blood samples via venous and capillary techniques from patients.
• Utilize the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders.
• Educate patients on proper specimen collection methods such as urine, stool, and sputum.
• Review orders from providers for accuracy and occasionally contact providers' offices for clarification.
• Process specimens according to requirements, including centrifuging and storing at appropriate temperatures.
• Prepare specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, ensuring timely processing and transport of STAT specimens.
• Perform waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serology under supervision.
• Maintain accurate records for temperature monitoring and quality control of laboratory testing.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Less than 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting preferred.
• Basic Life Support Training preferred.
• Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification preferred.
