About the position

The position involves collecting laboratory specimens according to established guidelines and following laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. The individual will maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens and adhere to quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance performed. The role requires the ability to identify problems that may affect test performance or reporting and to take corrective actions or notify supervisors as necessary. Additionally, the individual will ensure the confidentiality of electronic protected health information and adhere to compliance plans and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Collects all laboratory specimens according to laboratory guidelines.
  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Notifies Director of Laboratory Services and/or CMO when taking corrective action.
  • Has oversight of lab to ensure employees are performing job duties as assigned.
  • Follows all laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Ensures test results and other patient-specific data are accurately and reliably sent from point of data entry to final report destination, in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the confidentiality and privacy of electronic protected health information as set forth in BSHC policy and current HIPAA regulations.
  • Adheres to the terms and conditions set forth in BSHC's Compliance Plan.
  • Accurately and systematically records patient related data in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and ensuring that all supplies are viable before use in patient testing.
  • Responsible for following all safety procedures outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual and OSHA regulations and that medical waste is properly disposed of.
  • Continues education hours as mandated by state licensure.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution.
  • ASCP certification.
