About the position

The Lab Section Coordinator for Microbiology at Winchester Hospital plays a dual role as both a Medical Technologist and a staff supervisor. This leadership position is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations and quality standards in laboratory testing, while also providing day-to-day supervision to laboratory staff. The role is integral to achieving the hospital's success factors, which include quality and safety, patient experience, employee engagement, physician alignment, and financial growth. The coordinator will also participate in direct patient care and contribute to employee satisfaction and patient outcomes by performing accurate laboratory tests in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct day-to-day laboratory operations in assigned areas to ensure effective, efficient, safe, and patient-centered services.
  • Act as a liaison between staff and management, keeping management informed of operational issues.
  • Educate staff on departmental status and their contributions to achieving hospital goals.
  • Build and maintain a fair and efficient staffing plan, making recommendations for optimal staffing.
  • Participate in the candidate selection process and provide orientation and coaching to new staff.
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback and conduct performance evaluations for staff.
  • Monitor practices to optimize staff safety and resolve employee relations issues.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Prepare specimens and perform laboratory tests using manual methods or automated instrumentation.
  • Ensure specimen integrity and perform quality control checks and equipment maintenance.
  • Expedite results to clinicians for stat and critical results and maintain documentation for compliance.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a science field required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • At least three years of experience as a Medical Technologist with expertise in at least one assigned bench area.
  • Medical Technologist registry eligible; preferred to be registered (ASCP or applicable).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting prior to 1980.
  • MLT Certification (HEW or military) acquired prior to 1980.
