About the position

The Lab Med Technologist - Chemistry position at Holy Name involves performing moderate to high complexity testing in a laboratory setting. The role is focused on ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results while maintaining compliance with established laboratory protocols. This per diem position is specifically for weekends, providing flexibility for those looking to work part-time in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and determines rejections according to established guidelines.
  • Maintains and assures positive identity of all patient specimens throughout the analytical process.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, and reporting.
  • Enters and verifies all results completely and accurately.
  • Performs and records tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory under indirect supervision.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of difficult principles, procedures, and techniques, making independent judgments based on scientific knowledge.
  • Supervises personnel of less skill and experience.
  • Meets productivity standards and turnaround time of the department.
  • Recognizes testing errors or discrepancies and corrects problems or notifies the appropriate supervisor.
  • Operates all instruments according to accepted written protocols and troubleshoots instrument problems as needed.
  • Performs and documents all Quality Control and maintenance according to established Laboratory protocol.
  • Follows corrective action policies whenever test systems deviate from acceptable performance levels.
  • Performs proficiency testing and ensures samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Calls and documents abnormal, critical, or STAT results according to established protocol.
  • Correlates test results with diagnosis and resolves problems or inconsistencies.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of hospital and laboratory information systems.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly workplace and processes departmental supplies.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new personnel and instructs healthcare workers in specimen handling.
  • Assists physicians and hospital personnel with laboratory information and directs questions to appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories.
  • May assume responsibilities of section supervisors in their absence.
  • Informs supervisors of problems affecting the safety or function of the laboratory.
  • Practices standard precautions and infection control to protect self and patients.
  • Keeps current in the field of Medical Technology through literature and professional development.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related life sciences.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related life sciences (preferred).
  • ASCP certification or eligibility required upon hire.
