About the position

The Lab Assistant in the Natural Sciences department is responsible for setting up and taking down laboratory experiments, preparing materials for lab sessions, and maintaining laboratory inventory and safety. This role supports Chemistry and Biology labs, with occasional assistance for Geology and Physics labs, ensuring a clean and safe environment for students and faculty.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and set up lab sessions for students, ensuring all materials are ready and organized.
• Maintain lab stores and inventory, including purchasing and receiving instructional supplies and equipment.
• Ensure cleanliness, order, and safety of laboratory facilities, including maintaining safety equipment and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
• Supervise student workers and ensure they complete their assigned tasks effectively.
• Utilize software to track work and order requests from department faculty.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biology, or at least 16 hours of foundational college coursework in chemistry and biology with three years of related work experience.
• One year of related experience in a laboratory setting.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with laboratory equipment such as balances, pH meters, and spectrophotometers.
• Familiarity with safety data sheets (SDS) and hazardous materials management.
