About the position

The Connecticut Institute for Communities, Inc. is seeking a skilled short-term Cook to join our Kitchen team. This full-time position is expected to last between 8 to 12 weeks, with working hours from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The ideal candidate will have experience in preparing and cooking meals specifically for young children, and must be ready to start quickly. Knowledge of ServSafe Food Handling guidelines is essential for this role. The Cook will be responsible for preparing and cooking nutritious meals for preschool-aged children across 5-8 classes, with menus and recipes provided. This role requires ensuring compliance with menus and arranging alternatives when necessary to meet CACFP and Health guidelines. Additionally, the Cook will maintain a clean and organized kitchen area, ensuring that all food is stored and prepared safely according to ServSafe guidelines. Monitoring inventory and ordering supplies as needed, coordinating allergen alternatives through a color-coded system with teachers and staff regarding any dietary restrictions or allergies, and sanitizing the kitchen workspace after food service is completed are also key responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook nutritious meals for preschool-aged children across 5-8 classes (menu and recipes provided).
  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with menus and arrange alternatives when necessary that meet CACFP / Health guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen area.
  • Ensure that all food is stored and prepared safely according to ServSafe guidelines.
  • Monitor inventory and order supplies as needed with the assistance of the Kitchen Aids.
  • Coordinate allergen alternatives through a color-coded system with teachers and staff regarding any dietary restrictions or allergies.
  • Sanitize and clean kitchen workspace after food service is completed.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in food service, preferably in a school or daycare setting.
  • Knowledge of ServSafe Food Handling regulations.
  • Knowledge of CACFP guidelines is preferred.
  • Ability to plan and prepare nutritious meals by the recipe for 8 classrooms of children.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Individuals with Spanish language or Haitian Creole language skills are strongly encouraged to apply.
