Juvenile Detention Officer

About the position

The Juvenile Detention Officer position at Pima County Juvenile Court Center is an entry-level role focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of youth in a structured detention environment. Officers will receive training in de-escalation techniques, rapport building, and skill development for youth. The role involves monitoring the facility, providing mentorship, and implementing programs that support the goals of the detention center.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety and well-being of youth in the detention center.
• Develop positive working relationships with youth.
• Monitor and maintain a structured, caring, and safe environment for youth.
• Implement and deliver programs supporting detention philosophy and goals.
• Provide effective role modeling and mentoring to youth.
• Instruct youth on various skills such as anger management and employment processes.
• Observe youth behaviors and prepare written reports on incidents and rule infractions.
• Maintain rosters and daily logs, and prepare incident and progress reports.
• Process new detainees, including safety and security checks.
• Escort youth to and from courtrooms and throughout the facility.
• Drive a court vehicle to transport youth to appointments.
• React quickly and effectively to physical confrontations and emergencies using defensive tactics.
• Assist other officers as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Valid Arizona Driver's License required.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have legal resident status.
• Successful completion of background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and TB testing.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working with youth in a mentoring or educational capacity.
• Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and conflict resolution.
