About the position

The Juvenile Detention Officer I position involves supervisory responsibilities for residents at the Neaves Davis Center for Children. The officer is tasked with overseeing daily activities, maintaining order, and ensuring proper documentation. This role requires interaction with residents, including counseling and crisis management, while also being prepared to work various shifts, including overnight shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all activities of the residents at the center, including meals, rest periods, personal cleanliness, recreational periods, and school activities.
  • Maintains order and addresses disciplinary issues as necessary.
  • Prepares observation, incident, and behavior reports, ensuring all information in the daily logbook is accurate and legible.
  • Transports juveniles to and from scheduled appointments such as court hearings and medical visits.
  • Provides crisis counseling to de-escalate volatile situations when required.
  • May be required to work overnight shifts as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Some experience in a correctional or institutional environment.
  • Knowledge of sociology and child psychology as applied to delinquents.
  • Understanding of law enforcement and security measures.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with socially maladjusted children and their guardians.
  • Ability to plan and supervise children's activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of institutional maintenance and upkeep.
