About the position

The Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California is seeking a full-time investigator to join their Oakland office. This role is crucial for providing effective representation to indigent clients in federal criminal proceedings, ensuring the constitutional right to counsel is upheld. The investigator will work closely with legal teams to analyze cases, engage witnesses, manage evidence, and contribute to the overall defense strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly review and analyze discovery materials and other case-related documents using appropriate technology and tools.
  • Collaborate with defense team members to define the scope, timing, and direction of investigations.
  • Identify, locate, and interview witnesses crucial to the defense.
  • Handle tasks such as serving subpoenas and coordinating witness testimonies.
  • Locate, view, and retrieve pertinent evidence and personal property.
  • Document evidence through photography, videography, and digital capture tools.
  • Engage in social media and deep web investigations using forensic tools and advanced techniques.
  • Maintain proficiency with litigation support and digital forensic review tools.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and produce necessary records and maintain accurate logs.
  • Be prepared to testify in court as needed.
  • Engage directly with clients and their families to integrate their concerns into the investigative process.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of work experience, with at least two years in criminal investigation or information gathering.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience in non-legal fields, social work, paralegal, or legal assistant training is helpful.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate facts, evidence, and related information.
  • Excellent writing skills and computer proficiency.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in criminal justice and commitment to justice for indigent persons.
  • Valid California driver's license, car, and appropriate motor vehicle insurance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Spanish or other foreign language skills are desired but not required.
  • Experience developing and analyzing mitigation evidence for court proceedings.
  • Experience in digital/cyber forensics, financial forensics, or video/audio editing.
