About the position

The Interpreter - Sign Language position at Southcoast Health involves providing on-site and on-call interpretation services, facilitating communication between English-speaking individuals and those who use American Sign Language. This role is essential in ensuring effective communication in healthcare settings, particularly for patients and staff who are deaf or hard of hearing. The position requires flexibility in scheduling, including availability for evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide coverage on-site/on-call for Interpreter Services as requested.
• Provide accurate consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation from spoken English to American Sign Language and vice versa.
• Develop a rhythm of interpretation to enhance the flow of communication between parties.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of encounters.

Requirements

• Associate's Degree or equivalent knowledge and experience in a related field is required.
• Fluency in English and American Sign Language.
• One (1) year related experience required.
• Certificate of completion of a Medical Interpreter Training.
• Interpersonal skills appropriate for handling sensitive patient and/or employee issues.
• Training in medical terminology preferred.
