About the position

The Interpreter (Sign Language Interpreter) position at the Department of the Treasury involves providing communication access for deaf and hard-of-hearing employees in various settings. The role requires interpreting and transliterating between American Sign Language (ASL), Contact Variety Sign (CVS), Manually Coded English (MCE), and English, ensuring effective communication during meetings, training sessions, and other interactions. This position is crucial for facilitating understanding and collaboration between deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing personnel, particularly in specialized contexts that involve technical vocabulary.

Responsibilities

• Interprets in various settings for deaf/hard of hearing employees and hearing persons unfamiliar with sign language.
• Simultaneously and consecutively interprets/transliterates between ASL, CVS, MCE, and English.
• Uses oral forms of communication for oral deaf or hard of hearing individuals.
• Interprets/transliterates for deaf/hard of hearing employees in specialized meetings and training programs.
• Assists in the development of training curriculum for sign language courses.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service.
• Experience with ASL, CVS, and MCE for Sign-to-English and English-to-Sign interpretation.
• Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics.
• Effective written and oral communication skills.

• Experience with telecommunication devices and assistive listening technology for deaf/hard of hearing employees.
• Ability to identify barriers and resolve communication problems between supervisors and deaf/hard-of-hearing employees.
