About The Position

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians. As an Intern, Facilities Operations, you’ll work closely with Facilities and Manufacturing Engineering teams to drive continuous improvement across production processes such as fabrication, welding, and sub-assembly. From conducting time studies and collecting data to designing facility layouts in AutoCAD, you’ll gain practical experience in enhancing efficiency, reducing waste using lean methodologies, and improving workspace utilization. You’ll also collaborate directly with skilled trades on the production floor, contributing to real-world solutions that impact daily operations. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

Requirements

  • 3rd or 4th-year Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering Technology Co-op Student
  • Dedication to proactive continuous improvement with an open demeanor to change is extremely important
  • Excellent problem solving & communication skills (written & spoken) are a must
  • Ability to work cross-functionally as part of a team with minimal direction
  • Currently enrolled in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering program
  • Familiar with Lean Six Sigma methodologies and concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Support Facilities and Manufacturing Engineering Team in their assigned projects
  • Identify and improve manufacturing processes such as plasma cutting, fitting and welding, fabrication, and sub-assembly
  • Perform time studies, and data collection to confirm manufacturing norms
  • Calculate the workspace requirements and design strategies to utilize the workspace more effectively
  • Create workspace/ facilities layout using AutoCAD
  • Create standard operating procedures (SOP) and maintain manufacturing instructions used by the workforce
  • Identify waste in the manufacturing processes using lean methodologies
  • Work directly on the production floor with different groups of trades
  • Other duties as assigned
